This week’s new Dustinland comic is about me explaining Trump to my son. This conversation never actually happened, since I try to shield him from this horrible world we’re in, but we have had to talk a few times because he hears stuff at school and on the radio when I’m not quick enough to change the station. Basically he knows Trump is a racist liar, but that’s about it. But you know, when you try to explain things to a kid, you really make it clearer for yourself. Laying things out so simply, in basic language, it really helps. Try it sometime! Not actually with a real kid of course, but just imagine yourself doing it. Works for many a complex issue!
PS My hand is healing nicely! Still not perfect, still hurts a bit to draw. But hopefully I’ll be 100% soon and my art will get back to where it was, AKA still shitty but slightly less shitty.

As I say in this week’s new Dustinland comic, this attitude of “not my problem” is really screwing this country over. It’s sort of a Libertarian / capitalist thing that also winds up getting used by the selfish and lazy simply to justify their greedy lifestyles. Ironically, a lot of people who feel this way also call themselves godly, religious folks, which is really quite impressive, when most major religions are based around selflessness and caring for the needy and less powerful among us.
But hey, it’s fun being a hypocrite. And who wants problems? Problems are stressful. And freedom isn’t free. So just leave me alone and let me hide in my fortified compound with my guns, and don’t bother me unless I get cancer or my house blows down in a hurricane or gets flooded by climate change or my industry needs a subsidy. THEN I’ll come calling for a bail out because then it will be my problem.
Fun times. Happy President’s Day!
P.S. Sorry I missed a few weeks. Been crazy busy at work and these comics don’t pay the bills yo. Unless you buy more of my books! A lot more.

This new Dustinland comic pretty much says it all. It is a really miserable time for a majority of Americans. Although a very vocal minority is super happy right now, and I will say it right here: Just wait for the gloating comments on this strip. I predict they will either simply revel in “look how the liberals are freaking out” or perhaps voice some sort of sad, patronizing “the liberals are now delusional and we should pity them” thing. Just watch — it is so predictable, it’s really sad and scary. I have to admit, the right wing propaganda machine we are witnessing right now is incredibly effective to the point of sci-fi brainwashing. It may be undoable. I mean, we’re in 1984 territory right now, with truth and fact no longer agreed upon. 2 + 2 =5. That’s our future. Hell, that’s our present. Fun times everyone. Drink up. Happy holidays.

Not the most uplifting Dustinland comic this week, but I really do feel like the country is doomed. I guess the Democrats did pick up a few seats in some recent elections, so maybe those are a few spots of brightness, but it’s hard to feel positive. I am a bit of a pessimist of course, so there’s that, but still, things are bad. For example, as I say in the comic, Trump is getting flack from his base for having the gall to make a deal with the other party. That’s where we’re at right now. The right has made an uninformed monster out of its base, and there’s no steering them back to sanity. Decades of Fox News started it, and Trump seems to have finished it. I mean, sure, the left has uninformed echo chambers too, but what we’re seeing on the right is something special.
Bad times ahead, that’s what I’m seeing. I hope to be proved wrong. I really do. In fact, I’d love it.
I mean every word in this week’s Dustinland comic. I think deep down inside, a lot of Trump supporters know that he’s a horrible president, but they feel that if they withdraw their support of him, their either saying they should have supporter Hillary, or saying their opinions were wrong on issues like immigration, gun control etc… Or they just don’t want to admit they were wrong, especially to a bunch of pretentious liberal dicks who already acted like we were smarter than they were.
That is why now I am saying let’s stop all this “our team vs your team.” Let’s unite. No rubbing it in. No right or wrong. Just all of us together against Trump. Let’s kick him out and reset. Even with a completely conservative government. That’s fine. As long as they are adults and not complete incompetent criminals and traitors set to doom America and Earth in general.
Come on friends. We can still disagree on just about anything and everything. But this is one thing we need to agree on. Trump has us on the path to ruin, and he has to be stopped.

This week’s new Dustinland comic is the culmination of many months of thought, but was inspired by a single Reddit comment.
While I’ve been calling this whole Trump thing a game and a culture war that has nothing to do with policy (except for “guns are good, muslims and Mexicans are bad”), someone posted a comment on a Reddit thread that went something like “A Trump supporter would let Trump shit in his mouth if a liberal had to smell it.” That had a nice ring to it, and it sort of led me in this direction.
I mean, the politics of “winning” and spite and “us vs. them” have really brought us to a horrible place. Quite scary. The end of democracy in America, maybe the world, and maybe the end of human civilization ultimately. Fun times!

SPOILER ALERT! STOP READING NOW UNLESS YOU ALREADY READ THE NEW DUSTINLAND COMIC!!!
Ok so I assume you read the comic. Yeah, I combined the Syria attack with the Pepsi ad thing. You know, I mean, on the Trump thing I think it’s pretty clear he’s using war for his own political purposes, which to be honest is probably the most normal thing he’s done so far in office. Not that it’s good, it’s just sort of obvious to discuss why he did it after all he said in the past. And then whether it’s right or wrong, that is super complicated. I mean, I was frustrated for so long seeing the world watch and do nothing as innocent families have been killed over and over again in Syria, but I also see what happens when you destabilize regions of the world, or when you put ground troops on the ground. So yeah, I’d rather not get into that. I’d rather talk about the politics of soda!
Man, that ad. That was rough. You’ve got to assume some people who worked on it knew what was coming but were powerless to stop it. I feel for these people, I really do. Because you never know — sometimes 100 people want to do something cool and smart, and 2 people want to do something clueless and horrible, but if those 2 people are important enough, not only will they get their way, but everyone else will be too afraid to tell them any different. Or who knows, maybe everyone screwed up together. Maybe one day we’ll find out what really happened. Until then, I’ll draw cheap shot comics about it.
