This new Dustinland comic pretty much says it all. It is a really miserable time for a majority of Americans. Although a very vocal minority is super happy right now, and I will say it right here: Just wait for the gloating comments on this strip. I predict they will either simply revel in “look how the liberals are freaking out” or perhaps voice some sort of sad, patronizing “the liberals are now delusional and we should pity them” thing. Just watch — it is so predictable, it’s really sad and scary. I have to admit, the right wing propaganda machine we are witnessing right now is incredibly effective to the point of sci-fi brainwashing. It may be undoable. I mean, we’re in 1984 territory right now, with truth and fact no longer agreed upon. 2 + 2 =5. That’s our future. Hell, that’s our present. Fun times everyone. Drink up. Happy holidays.

This week’s Dustinland comic was written in response to Trump’s pull out from the Paris Climate Agreement, but I did it in a way that would hopefully appeal to people who don’t already agree with me. That’s why you notice, no mention of climate change, but rather a focus on a few things we can all agree on: freedom, fiscal independence, and future-facing technology. Curious to see if I get any positive responses from the other side or if it will just be the same old zombie Fox News “coal jarbs and hoax” blah blah blah we’re all used to hearing.

This week’s new Dustinland comic is the culmination of many months of thought, but was inspired by a single Reddit comment.
While I’ve been calling this whole Trump thing a game and a culture war that has nothing to do with policy (except for “guns are good, muslims and Mexicans are bad”), someone posted a comment on a Reddit thread that went something like “A Trump supporter would let Trump shit in his mouth if a liberal had to smell it.” That had a nice ring to it, and it sort of led me in this direction.
I mean, the politics of “winning” and spite and “us vs. them” have really brought us to a horrible place. Quite scary. The end of democracy in America, maybe the world, and maybe the end of human civilization ultimately. Fun times!

This new Dustinland comic is pretty straight forward so not too much to say here, aside from the fact that I was inspired to write it after reading comments from Trump supporters regarding the Women’s March. It really was amazing how people who didn’t know each other were saying almost identical things in completely different forums and social media platforms. I know there’s a lot of similarity between liberal ideas, but the speed in which the identical response to the Women’s March was shared between Trump fans was really amazing, and sort of scary. For a group that proposes to be about freedom and anti-establishment values, they seem pretty eager to accept and spread any propaganda that reinforces their beliefs and makes them feel better about themselves in the face of evidence and facts that paint them and their man in even the slightest negative light.
Should be a fun four years (or months). Oh well, they can always read last week’s comic for excuses once the S.S. Donald starts taking on water.

This week’s Dustinland comic is not me preaching to the choir, although that would have been very easy to do at this moment in time. Rather, it’s about how there really seems to be two Americas. More so now than ever before. And maybe this is nothing new, but it sure has been brought to light as half the nation celebrates Trump’s win while the other half cringes in fear and misery.
Going back 16 years, it’s not all too different than Bush. Patriotic hero to the right, hated buffoon to the left. Then Obama came along. Composed yet righteous inspiration to the left. Power grabbing demon to the right. How can the country be so incredibly split? How can so many people look at the same facts yet come to the opposite conclusion? Ah… but there you have it. They’re NOT looking at the same facts. They never were, and it’s only getting worse.
Sure, back in the day people could choose to read the conservative newspaper or the liberal newspapers. Then came radio. Then came TV news. Then came 24-hour TV news. And then came the internet. And then came social media. Never before has it been so easy to have your own opinion validated by information either cherrypicked or completely made up by people looking to profit by telling you what you want to hear. What’s true? What’s fact? Who knows anymore? And that’s the scariest part of this whole election.

This week’s Dustinland comic describes my post debate mood. More so directly after the debate rather than the following day, but either way, it’s super depressing. I actually had to take a Benadryl to get to sleep last night, the debates stress me out so much. Instead of inspiring you, they make you feel like shit. It’s a real bummer. Hopefully we’ve hit the bottom but who knows. There’s always worse.

This latest Dustinland comic will probably offend some people but oh well. At this point, Dustinland is a non-profit venture. I don’t make money off it, and my livelihood does not depend upon it. So I can do with it whatever I want, and at this point, I feel like venting. Perhaps you agree with me, perhaps you don’t. Either way, it’s hard to argue with this one fact: I hate this election more than any I have ever been witness to. It is awful and depressing, and winning is losing to some degree in either situation. That’s how I feel, and that sucks — for me.
It will probably suck for you too whether you know it or not, and that’s sad. Hey, maybe not. Maybe everything will turn out just fine. I would love that. I would love to be wrong. Because unlike most people these days, I’d rather be happy than right.
