Breathe

As I say in this week’s Dustinland comic: YAY! The Democrats won the House! Now we can relax and not have to think about politics for a while! Ah…. so chill. Nothing to worry about anymore!

Last Chance

Well, everyone, I as say in this week’s Dustinland comic, this is either the beginning of a potential return to sanity, or the end of democracy in America — and possibly the world. If Trump holds on to the Senate and the House, it’s over. This country will fall into straight up permanent minority rule, where the Trumps and the Kochs will sit at the top as Fox News spreads their propaganda, voting is just a fake display to cover up the rigged elections (if it’s not already), and everything else will fall to shit. And of course, just like in all right-wing authoritarian societies, violent mobs of fundamentalist thugs will help make sure dissent is kept quiet. It’s already started — all of this.

To be honest, even if the Democrats take back the House, even if they take the Senate, even if they impeach Trump – we may not ever get our country back. Something has been opened up and exposed, something uglier than most of us thought was there, buried deep within America. Or maybe not so deep. But now we all know, there is such hatred, fear and ignorance here, maybe another civil war is not so far off. Because the right is living in its own reality at this point, and they will not accept facts that don’t support what they want to believe, and they will not accept compromise.

Garry Kasparov said something about how dictators win by bringing their supporters so slow, so far down into the filth with them, making them slowly defend worse and worse things… eventually, they can’t come back. They’ve gone too far. To admit it was all wrong… that they were part of the horror… that’s too much to deal with. Scary times. I never thought I would see this happen here. I guess we’re never really safe. It’s like what you can feel in the air during a blackout. Civilization is an illusion that is only a few bad mistakes away from complete savagery.

Well, good luck. To us all.

Overcome

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about conservatives and how horribly persecuted they are. Or want to be. You’ll see what I mean.

Props to Matt Taibbi for bringing this to my attention many years ago in his excellent book, Spanking The Donkey.

Kids Get It

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about me explaining Trump to my son. This conversation never actually happened, since I try to shield him from this horrible world we’re in, but we have had to talk a few times because he hears stuff at school and on the radio when I’m not quick enough to change the station. Basically he knows Trump is a racist liar, but that’s about it. But you know, when you try to explain things to a kid, you really make it clearer for yourself. Laying things out so simply, in basic language, it really helps. Try it sometime! Not actually with a real kid of course, but just imagine yourself doing it. Works for many a complex issue!

PS My hand is healing nicely! Still not perfect, still hurts a bit to draw. But hopefully I’ll be 100% soon and my art will get back to where it was, AKA still shitty but slightly less shitty.

Slippery Slope

This week’s new Dustinland comic tackles a particularly annoying argument tactic used frequently by conservatives (well, really Trump supporters so basically hypnotized fascists): The Slippery Slope! Any regulation can be argued against by saying, “oh well it starts here and then where does it end?!” Obviously this is ridiculous because we live in a society that must be governed and managed by rules, and if we stand by the philosophy of slippery slope, then any rule can be argued against. “I can’t murder?! What’s next, I can’t defend my own property against a band of armed robbers!” It’s just a thread of nonsense, but that doesn’t stop the NRA from using it every day.

I’m sure people on the left use it too from time to time, but right now the country is essentially being overtaken by an illegal rightwing coup, so that’s my bigger focus for the time being. If the country doesn’t devolve into a complete dictatorship, if the economy doesn’t collapse as the rest of the world begins to isolate us (except our new best friends, Russia), if the boiling planet doesn’t burn us off into extinction along with every other disappearing species, then maybe I’ll make some more comics that point out problems with liberals. Until then I will focus on the party that thinks science is magic and guns are peaceful and up is down.

Happy Holidays: 2017 Style

This new Dustinland comic pretty much says it all. It is a really miserable time for a majority of Americans. Although a very vocal minority is super happy right now, and I will say it right here: Just wait for the gloating comments on this strip. I predict they will either simply revel in “look how the liberals are freaking out” or perhaps voice some sort of sad, patronizing “the liberals are now delusional and we should pity them” thing. Just watch — it is so predictable, it’s really sad and scary. I have to admit, the right wing propaganda machine we are witnessing right now is incredibly effective to the point of sci-fi brainwashing. It may be undoable. I mean, we’re in 1984 territory right now, with truth and fact no longer agreed upon. 2 + 2 =5. That’s our future. Hell, that’s our present. Fun times everyone. Drink up. Happy holidays.

Tomorrow Is Yesterday

This week’s Dustinland comic was written in response to Trump’s pull out from the Paris Climate Agreement, but I did it in a way that would hopefully appeal to people who don’t already agree with me. That’s why you notice, no mention of climate change, but rather a focus on a few things we can all agree on: freedom, fiscal independence, and future-facing technology. Curious to see if I get any positive responses from the other side or if it will just be the same old zombie Fox News “coal jarbs and hoax” blah blah blah we’re all used to hearing.
