What’s It All Worth?

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about the whole GameStop saga, which I find amazing and entertaining. Honestly I could write thousands of words about it, which made it extra challenging to distill my thoughts into a few illustrated frames.

Basically, the GameStop thing itself is a great story of regular peeps manipulating the market in the same way billionaire hedge fund assholes normally do, and in fact sticking it to said hedge douches. In the bigger picture, it really sheds light on how “fake” the market can be (not always, but sometimes, maybe even often). In the bigger picture, it shows how there is a system out there where, like Matt Taibbi said, Wall Street is just a giant vampire squid sucking money away from the rest of us. And in the really big picture, it shows just how unreal much of our modern civilization really is, and how dangerously close we can get to everyone giving up on the illusions and all of it falling apart — this last party really is attached to the whole Trump/Fox misinformation era as well, in that there seems to be an unraveling of what we all agree upon as “true” and “real”. There’s also a connection to everything laid out in the book Sapiens, ie there are no border, nations or companies really… just illusions and agreements.

So yeah, big topic, and as you can see by my comic, I sum it all up by saying that while none of this is “real”, it can and does affect us all in real ways. Pain, suffering, hunger, and the reverse — these things are real. And when you’re dealing with them, suddenly all your philosophical issues melt away and you just care about not dying.

Keep it Real

If you didn’t scroll all the way down, past the comic, you didn’t get the joke in this week’s Dustinland. And if this is the case, I’ll give you a second to go back and check it out without spoiling it.

Okay, so now that you’ve seen the entire comic, I can tell you that all of that stuff is real, except for the very last row at the bottom, which clearly I made up. Pretty amazing, huh?

Anyway, I sure do hope I get a lot of Wykops for this post, or maybe even a few Yardbarks.

Tis Hard to Pee Straight

This week’s Dustinland may not be the most highbrow strip I’ve ever done, however, it is very truthful, and, I’d like to think, insightful. I’m hoping my female readership can learn from this strip and come to understand that, for the most part, when a man steps into the bathroom and begins to pee, he does not close his eyes and spin around in a circle, despite what it may look like when he is done.

In other news, I will be away on bidness for a bit, so there will be no new comics next week. Fear not, however, for I will be back the following week with a super fantastic double- or even triple-sized Dustinland.

***Update: check out the fascinating pee-dialog this strip has inspired over at Reddit and a slightly less fascinating dialog here on Digg.

Dorm of the Deaf hits No. 3 on Reddit

12/13/07: The Dorm of the Deaf Dustinland made it to No. 3 on Reddit.com today. Big thanks to the star of the show, Jan-Karl. And from a quick check around the web, it seems the strip was mostly well-received in the deaf community, so that’s good.  Here’s some fanmail:

Dorm of the Deaf is so effing funny! I myself am deaf and I just laughed my ass off. I apologize for the majority of inconsiderate deaf pricks. Thanks for making my day! That comic is spreading like wildfire thru the deaf community. I’m from RIT and it’s the talk of the campus or so to speak. Thought you would like to know that other people are appreciating it as well.
