Outlookin

This week’s new Dustinland comic was inspired by my last trip into the city for work. I was walking to the office when I had this realization that I could be unfairly assuming everyone is awful. I mean, they could be, but is that the best way to live? I remember this graduation speech that David Foster Wallace gave, where basically he said sure, we can assume the worst of everyone, we may even be right about it… but we should strive to not see the world that way. After all, will it make us happier to live in protective bubbles of cynicism and disdain, or will it make us hate life and everyone around us?

Now, I’m not saying I live in the happy rainbow world either. But we’re always evolving and I think at least I’m more and more aware of my thoughts and sub-thoughts, and all I can do is strive to be better and happier.

Also weed girl in the comic is not a real person. I just thought it would be a funny way to end the strip so I made up this stoner friend. I do actually know someone like that but he’s a pretty normal looking dude and I didn’t feel like drawing that. High five.

Cautiously Potimistic

I can’t believe it. I really can’t. In fact I did a whole new Dustinland comic on it, but I decided to run this one instead because I became more fascinated with the first frame of that one, and turned that into this comic.

Man, I guess if it were ever high time for a change, it would be these days.

Inconceivaple

This week’s Dustinland comic is about the vaping scare, which is definitely freaking out a lot of people. You know, I don’t feel bad for the big companies that are trying to get kids hooked on candy apple bubble gum vapes, but I do feel bad for all the vape shops that have popped up around the country. Not that they’re nice places, but I mean… that’s a lot of small businesses that are getting hit by a sudden massive problem.

Also I feel bad for anyone who wants to sneak weed into a concert.

Babies Are Drunk, Toddlers Are High

I’ve had the idea that babies are drunk for quite some time. It’s pretty obvious. They waddle around clutching a bottle, they babble, drool, fall over. They’re wasted. But the stoner thing featured in this week’s Dustinland comic was a recent thought. I could honestly do a whole blog just dedicated to viewing toddlers are stoners. All their weird tastes, the things they say, the scenarios they imagine, their explanations for things, the questions they ask—it’s like hanging out with a bunch of college hippie bongo players. And hey, that’s pretty awesome because hippies are funny. Sure, you don’t want to count on one to not lose their boot at a Waffle House in the middle of Tennessee, causing you to drive around from exit to exit in the middle of the night on the way back from Bonnaroo (true story) but you wouldn’t want to count on a baby to drive you home either.

The Pros and Cons of Legal Marijuana

Well, the election is over, and I thought I would celebrate with a comic that has nothing to do with it! Actually, this comic is the result of several efforts to legalize medical marijuana, or just plain pot in general, in states like Colorado and Washington. Definitely a more fun subject than politics—as long as you don’t go into the whole drug war not working thing. Basically, making fun of jam bands = funny. Dude in Montana going to jail for 80 years for growing weed for cancer patients = not funny.
