Social Media After Trump

Sorry I missed last week. I had the choice to watch the Super Bowl or draw a comic and I choose Super Bowl. And now I’m also a day late this week. Because of work. Yeah man, life makes cartooning hard. But Trump makes it easy! As per this week’s new Dustinland comic, which is my impression of our social media feeds these days. Pretty shitty. All Trump, all the time. I usually hate the Grammy’s but this year it was nice because at least people were talking about music instead of Trump. I mean, there was plenty of Trump there too but at least not 100% Trump.

Uh… silver lining… at least people are involved now? Maybe that whole burn it down so we can really fix it theory will work after this? That’s the best I can do.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The 6 Stage of Dead Phone Battery Grief

As I say in this week’s Dustinland comic, when your phone dies and you’re not in the position to recharge it, at first you panic. But eventually you accept it, and at that point you are finally alive again. No email or texts to harass you. No Instagram or other time wasting social platforms or apps to distract you. Just life. Slow and beautiful. The moment. Be in it. Enjoy it. One day we will surely all be interconnected cyborgs, or living in a post apocalyptic wasteland. Either way, enjoy your rare moments of life without a phone. You may become more fleeting than you could imagine.

Instagram Cliches 2

I did another Dustinland comic about Instagram cliches a while back (old one here). It had a different title, but basically the same thing, so I called this one part 2 (new comic here).

Now, I’ll admit, I go for some of these once in a while. Hey, straight facade architecture shots? I love em. But it is funny to see these same shots reproduced over and over again. Different places, different subjects, same photos. I mean hey, certain things work really well in a 1- to 2-inch square.

How to be Popular on Instagram

I’m relatively new to Instagram, so perhaps this week’s Dustinland is a bit late to a subject other people have already touched on. Or maybe it’s totally original. Either way, I actually love Instagram and I’m not trying to poop on it. It’s just fun to find trends and patterns that people seem to obsess over—or really ways people game the system. I feel like everything about the Internet / social / mobile today is about gaming the system. “Best practices.” Tricks to get more followers. Maybe I’m just too cynical but it seems like for so many people, the fun is not in the doing but in the receiving of approval. I’ve touched on this before, and I’ll probably touch on it again, maybe because I feel the pull of vindication just as much as anyone else does. Otherwise I’d be drawing comics in a sketch book instead of posting them online, right?
