Excuse Yourself

This week’s Dustinland comic seems pretty self-explanatory. I just know the excuses are going to start rolling in as the Trump presidency disaster unfolds so it will be fun to get ahead of them now and then we can look back at this strip in a year or two and laugh. Or maybe we’re all really so fucked that we won’t be laughing at all. Hard to tell. Hey, maybe Trump is a secret genius and I will say BOY WAS I WRONG! WHAT A GUY! I would love that, really. I think the odds of that happening are about the same as the odds of my entire house suddenly turning into a 25-ton block of gold but sure, let’s see what happens.

I guess there is one thing I want to speak on — the ending. Isn’t it funny how nobody voted for Bush? We had him for eight years (through illegal elections) and millions of people voted for him twice yet suddenly no one seems proud of that. That’s who I see at Trump rallies. The same people—mostly—who said it was “unpatriotic” to not blindly support Bush through illegal wars and disastrous economic policies meant to benefit the .01% at the expense of the rest of us, now suddenly they’re these angry populist anti-war anti-interventionists. Really it comes down to this: After 9-11 they figured we could bomb our way to safety. That didn’t work, so now we can wall our way to safety.

I went off track there a bit but the point is, no one is willing to take responsibility for the failed Bush presidency, and no one will be willing to take responsibility for the unfolding Trump nightmare that could potentially destroy this country, if the GOP isn’t strong enough or patriotic enough to stop him. That’s really what it’s going to come down to. Will the Paul Ryans and John McCains have the balls to stop Trump as he runs this country as his own personal family bank account / PR machine? We’ll see. I imagine they’d love to boot Trump and insert Pence and then boom, it’s like Bush all over again but with a slicker speaker. Seems like a win for the traditional Republican machine. Well, we’ll see. Fun times! I look forward to the excuses!

Why

This week’s comic is not a solicitation for props or support. I’m not fishing for compliments. I’m just working out some issues I’ve been having lately. You know, it takes a lot of time and effort to draw comics. Well, at least some comics (don’t worry, I won’t get into that whole thing again). And for me personally, I have been struggling to make time lately. Between parenthood and holding down a career, finding a few hours a week to spend doodling can be difficult. And when you’re watching your traffic slowly wane away, you start to wonder… is there a point to all this?

Now, I don’t have an answer. And there’s no reason to repeat myself here. Basically, I’m just trying to work it out. And maybe that’s what my comic is for after all. Maybe that’s what all true art is for. Not expressing yourself, but understanding yourself. Figuring out what matters, what drives you, what you really care about and enjoy. And if other people happen to enjoy watching you do so—hell, watching me do so—then great. Even better.

Call it what you will. Psychological crutch. Fantasy world. Pipe dream. Therapy. Whatever it is, I’m going to keep doing it, whether Reddit likes it or not. Maybe the time will come when I call it quits, but I’m going to try to put that off for as long as possible. Preferrably as long as Charles Schulz did, even though we work/ed under somewhat different circumstances.
