Derision 2020

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about the tough choice ahead of us in the U.S. presidential election. And by tough choice, I mean the decision between perhaps not your ideal candidate in the form of Joe Biden, and Trump, an evil conman dictator autocrat using America’s enemies to dismantle our democracy for his personal financial gain and narcissistic and likely mentally ill ego. You know, it’s a toss up. Vote for a nice guy who means well and is a rational caring human being, or someone who’s never done a thing to help anyone in his entire life, and whose actions could risk the future of life on earth. TOUGH CHOICE PEOPLE!

Moderaters

This week’s new Dustinland comic is my response to all the political experts who have been telling us who can and can’t beat Trump. Well, at least they tell us who can’t. And that seems to be anyone who actually stands for any sort of truly progressive issue, any candidate who believes in changing America for the better. They tell us, oh America isn’t ready for that. You stand for change? That’s crazy! You want the same healthcare the rest of the world has? You crazy leftists! You think it’s bad that multi-billion-dollar companies pay zero taxes in the U.S.? You wacky socialists! You better shut up and leave the politics to the centrists. Yes, play it safe, right down the middle, stand for nothing. That’s the way to win elections.

Meanwhile conservatives around the world push for increasingly extremist agendas and win. So the right goes further to the right, and it works for them, but we’re told that the left should not do the same… instead of fighting back and pushing for progressive stances, we should either support the status quo, or actually go further to the right. That makes a lot of sense. Turn ourselves into a watered down version of the right, in order to combat the right. That sounds like a winning recipe. But this advice is from the people who got us where we are today, so maybe they’re not the best ones to listen to after all.

2020 Resolutions

This new Dustinland comic — the last of 2019 — is a bit of a “guide”‘ for your 2020 new year’s resolutions. But you know, it’s a bit tongue in cheek. You’ll see what I mean. Let’s just say that next year, maybe give yourself a bit of a break, if that’s what it takes to keep your sanity.

Good luck, happy new year, and thanks for reading!

Let’s All Be Fwiends

This week’s new Dustinland comic was about Trump supporters and how to relate to them, although really it’s just a clever way of mocking them. I find they respond better to this sort of thing. When you get serious with them, they just try to piss you off because that’s what they enjoy most. That’s really their ultimate hope from the Trump presidency: piss off liberals (and keep away the brown people).

But yeah, jokes. It’s sad the best way to respond to people during a Constitutional crisis occurring in the midst of a worldwide environmental catastrophe threatening all life on Earth, but if you have a better idea, let me know.

There Is No Middle

Yes, this week’s new Dustinland comic is about impeachment. I didn’t want to do it, because there’s just so much noise out there and it’s so hard to beat the news cycle to it at this point, but it felt ridiculous to post something trivial in the midst of this crisis. But I do think I have a different take on it.

Is anyone even reading this, by the way? I do this blog and it gets likes every week but I wonder if it’s just essentially other bloggers autoliking my posts when I use similar tags. Maybe WordPress is just one big circle jerk where no one reads anyone else’s stuff but just fake likes their posts to get more people to their own blog. Social media is probably like that too. I mean, I do hear some people interact with each other. It’s happened to me before. Sometimes here. Maybe today!

Bluh

I have been having a tough time lately coming up with cute observational comics as I watch the world burn. That’s what this week’s new Dustinland comic is about. I have a feeling people won’t enjoy it very much, since it’s just depressing and offers little humor or solution. But it’s really just therapy for me — I need to get it out so I can move on.

Sick Of It

This week’s new Dustinland comic is the smartest dumbest comic I’ve ever made. Go read it, then come back here and read this.

So, you know, in addition to the ridiculous wordplay, metaphorically speaking there is a lot going on here.

You can consider the notion of impeachment as a tempting, sexy little devil, luring many of us into its grasp, for good or for bad.

You can consider that our nation’s laws have been compromised, and that those who need to defend it most are being blocked from doing their duty.

And just think… what is Putin’s Russia doing to our country? How is he waging war without shooting a bullet?

And most importantly, sick of it… that’s the feeling we should all have from this whole entire period of our country’s history. A national disgrace that should have every good American sick to their stomachs.

Breathe

As I say in this week’s Dustinland comic: YAY! The Democrats won the House! Now we can relax and not have to think about politics for a while! Ah…. so chill. Nothing to worry about anymore!

Last Chance

Well, everyone, I as say in this week’s Dustinland comic, this is either the beginning of a potential return to sanity, or the end of democracy in America — and possibly the world. If Trump holds on to the Senate and the House, it’s over. This country will fall into straight up permanent minority rule, where the Trumps and the Kochs will sit at the top as Fox News spreads their propaganda, voting is just a fake display to cover up the rigged elections (if it’s not already), and everything else will fall to shit. And of course, just like in all right-wing authoritarian societies, violent mobs of fundamentalist thugs will help make sure dissent is kept quiet. It’s already started — all of this.

To be honest, even if the Democrats take back the House, even if they take the Senate, even if they impeach Trump – we may not ever get our country back. Something has been opened up and exposed, something uglier than most of us thought was there, buried deep within America. Or maybe not so deep. But now we all know, there is such hatred, fear and ignorance here, maybe another civil war is not so far off. Because the right is living in its own reality at this point, and they will not accept facts that don’t support what they want to believe, and they will not accept compromise.

Garry Kasparov said something about how dictators win by bringing their supporters so slow, so far down into the filth with them, making them slowly defend worse and worse things… eventually, they can’t come back. They’ve gone too far. To admit it was all wrong… that they were part of the horror… that’s too much to deal with. Scary times. I never thought I would see this happen here. I guess we’re never really safe. It’s like what you can feel in the air during a blackout. Civilization is an illusion that is only a few bad mistakes away from complete savagery.

Well, good luck. To us all.

Overcome

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about conservatives and how horribly persecuted they are. Or want to be. You’ll see what I mean.

Props to Matt Taibbi for bringing this to my attention many years ago in his excellent book, Spanking The Donkey.
