This week’s Dustinland comic is obviously timed for the 4th of July. And it’s all questions. Because that’s how I feel about America right now. I just don’t know anymore. It’s all contradictions. I have a great life. I’m lucky and grateful. But I’m also incredibly pessimistic about the future, and I see so many signs of our democracy crumbling, and of the world at danger. I don’t know what the future will be. I don’t know what this country is about anymore. I don’t know if I believe in America’s capability to self-govern and function as a country run for and by the people.
I do know we’ve accomplished so much as a nation. I do know I owe so much to this country and I’m so lucky to have been born here. But I don’t know our children will be saying the same thing 20 years from now. And that’s a scary thought.
It’s up to the people to make sure this country remains a great place to live. And these days, that’s what scares me.
