This week’s new Dustinland comic is the smartest dumbest comic I’ve ever made. Go read it, then come back here and read this.
So, you know, in addition to the ridiculous wordplay, metaphorically speaking there is a lot going on here.
You can consider the notion of impeachment as a tempting, sexy little devil, luring many of us into its grasp, for good or for bad.
You can consider that our nation’s laws have been compromised, and that those who need to defend it most are being blocked from doing their duty.
And just think… what is Putin’s Russia doing to our country? How is he waging war without shooting a bullet?
And most importantly, sick of it… that’s the feeling we should all have from this whole entire period of our country’s history. A national disgrace that should have every good American sick to their stomachs.

As I say in this week’s Dustinland comic: YAY! The Democrats won the House! Now we can relax and not have to think about politics for a while! Ah…. so chill. Nothing to worry about anymore!

Well, everyone, I as say in this week’s Dustinland comic, this is either the beginning of a potential return to sanity, or the end of democracy in America — and possibly the world. If Trump holds on to the Senate and the House, it’s over. This country will fall into straight up permanent minority rule, where the Trumps and the Kochs will sit at the top as Fox News spreads their propaganda, voting is just a fake display to cover up the rigged elections (if it’s not already), and everything else will fall to shit. And of course, just like in all right-wing authoritarian societies, violent mobs of fundamentalist thugs will help make sure dissent is kept quiet. It’s already started — all of this.
To be honest, even if the Democrats take back the House, even if they take the Senate, even if they impeach Trump – we may not ever get our country back. Something has been opened up and exposed, something uglier than most of us thought was there, buried deep within America. Or maybe not so deep. But now we all know, there is such hatred, fear and ignorance here, maybe another civil war is not so far off. Because the right is living in its own reality at this point, and they will not accept facts that don’t support what they want to believe, and they will not accept compromise.
Garry Kasparov said something about how dictators win by bringing their supporters so slow, so far down into the filth with them, making them slowly defend worse and worse things… eventually, they can’t come back. They’ve gone too far. To admit it was all wrong… that they were part of the horror… that’s too much to deal with. Scary times. I never thought I would see this happen here. I guess we’re never really safe. It’s like what you can feel in the air during a blackout. Civilization is an illusion that is only a few bad mistakes away from complete savagery.
Well, good luck. To us all.

This week’s Dustinland comic is about how I feel about being Jewish, which is different than most Jews, I would imagine, since I am very non-Jewish in terms of practicing religion, or even cultural traditions for that matter. Basically, I light a menorah once a year and my parents make potato pancakes. That’s how Jewish I am. It stops there. But still, I am part of something much bigger. I’m a funny (supposedly) New Yorker that works in the media/advertising industries, so there’s that. But the whole thing is pretty weird. Not to be too much of a hippie stoner about it, but I’m just a person trying to make his way through life, and yet I am caught up in this centuries old feud, where you have to assume at least a billion people don’t like me, or at least don’t like the idea of me.
I don’t know. Everything is just awful right now, and getting worse. I mean, forget anti-semitism. Brazil is about to destroy the Amazon and China just said let’s kill all tigers and rhinos. The world is fucked. Mankind is doomed. But hey, I guess blame the Jews.
This week’s Dustinland comic is about how the MTA and Metro-North just erected a 150-foot cell tower right next to a low income housing community’s playground in Tarrytown, Westchester, where I live. I don’t live in that community, but I do live close by, and I thought I was pissed when I could see this huge ugly pole out my window. I can’t imagine what these people feel like, having this thing looming over them.
I’m actually part of a grassroots movement that’s trying to get this thing moved, but I think it will be a tough fight. I’ve been looking into it and it sounds like these things go up all over the country and no one wants them but basically it’s like, tough shit, losers. But it’s at least worth fighting it. I know these things have to go somewhere, but why there? I mean, the town isn’t even getting paid! It’s on MTA property, tax free, so they can rent it out to phone service providers and keep all the profit, and we get nothing except an eyesore and maybe some radiation. Now that’s America.

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about conservatives and how horribly persecuted they are. Or want to be. You’ll see what I mean.
Props to Matt Taibbi for bringing this to my attention many years ago in his excellent book, Spanking The Donkey.

I drew a more complex comic yesterday but just replaced it with this new Dustinland strip. I need to fix the longer one. Both are about how polarized Trump has made this country. The new comic I just posted shows the result of this. The other longer strip I’m working on is about how authoritarian leaders get us to this point. I think I’ll have it fixed by next week, but who knows. By then we could be dealing with some other horrible thing and I’ll have to draw a comic about that instead, or maybe just skip the whole political thing in favor of a “kids say the darnedest things” strip for some stress release.
In other news, follow me on Facebook because I finally have a fan page! Yes, Facebook is evil and helped us get to this horrible place, but hey, um, people still use it. So I mean, don’t use it if you aren’t already. But if you do use it, follow me there. High five.
