Bluh

I have been having a tough time lately coming up with cute observational comics as I watch the world burn. That’s what this week’s new Dustinland comic is about. I have a feeling people won’t enjoy it very much, since it’s just depressing and offers little humor or solution. But it’s really just therapy for me — I need to get it out so I can move on.

Birdy

I rarely mention Birdy here, since he’s such a, shall we say, acquired taste. And he makes very infrequent appearances these days. You see, if you’re new to Birdy, he’s a character I created one day on the beach as a satirical joke, a dark twist on the pre-webcomic, lame and corny daily newspaper comic strips I grew up reading. Which, to be honest, I sort of yearn for these days, but that’s another story. But yes, Birdy. I did not think he would go on for years and years, over 1,600 dark, creepy and sometimes abstract and/or just not funny. But eventually it got hard to squeeze another gag out of him in between a career and dad life, so I put the breaks on. He comes out every now and then, though, including his three new strips, here, here and here. They’re based on internets, and I figure if Joan CornellĂ  can sink to these sort of things, so can I.

I’m New Here

I’ve been drawing a new comic called I’m New Here for a local newspaper called The River Journal. They cover a bunch of towns up here in Westchester, including mine. I say up here because Westchester is north of NYC, and that’s sort of where everything is judged by around these parts. Anyway, you can see the first four strips here. There’s certainly a theme, as you can tell from the title. I grew up in an apartment in Queens so being new to the suburbs provides endless ideas. If you’re lucky enough to live in a Hudson river town, you get the printed version delivered right into your mailbox. Good times.

Learning Language

In this week’s new Dustinland comic, my kid learns to curse. Oh well. I did do a good job of at least keeping it out of the house for years. But once a few older kids and big brothers come along… well, it’s only a matter of time. May he use them sparingly and appropriately.

Dead Aminals

Yup, I drew a new Dustinland comic about roadkill. I know, just what you’ve been waiting for, right?! Well, if I can make this subject fun to read about, I’ve won. What I’ve won, I don’t know.
