The Cycle

Yeah… I mean, as this week’s Dustinland comic shows, it’s hard to sleep sometimes. Damn brain. Shut up! Shut up, brain! Perhaps some of this is due to my health habits of not working out ever, not meditating, etc… I should do some of that stuff. Also beer, coffee… all the things that make life fun… I dunno. I actually do everything in moderation but sometimes it feels like even that is too much.

Blech. I blame Trump.

Move Your Sack

Let me get into the interesting details behind this week’s Dustinland comic.

See, I drew the first half based on my daily annoyances that are pretty well spelled out in the strip. But then, after it was all done and even uploaded, this morning I listened to an episode of This American Life, which I never do on my commute, because I never do the podcast thing, always opting for music instead. And this episode, it was about a French comedian trying to make it in America. At one point Jeff Garland is critiquing his set, and just goes off. “He’s a craftsman, but he’s not an artist because I don’t care about what he’s talking about. He doesn’t care! Talk about what you care about! That’s interesting!”

And I was inspired to go deeper with this strip. Because as you can see, I do care. It’s about the principle. Not just the bag, not just the minor inconvenience. Every time this happens, I think about all this stuff, all this human nature misery. It riles me up. That’s why I care. And now you know. Thanks, Ira Glass!

Just Fine

This week’s new Dustinland comic is about when you’re in a bad mood and someone is all bubbly and friendly, asking you “HEY WHAT’S UP?!” and you just can’t hide your discontent and you just sort of fake it unconvincingly. Also I was super busy and only had time to draw one frame, so yeah, tah-dah!

Nutmare

I could probably make every single comic about my kid, but I try to switch it up. But yes, here is my third Dustinland comic of the year, and it’s inspired by my son’s real “nightmare.” I mean, I guess it could be scary if it was “directed” right, if you will. Maybe scary like the part of the Shining where the guy is in the bear costume and you’re just like “what?” But man, when you wake up at 3:00 AM and run into the kid’s room, you expect something way worse that that.

Also, it’s a new year. Perfect time to buy my book, Thanks For The Meh-mories: 20 Years of Dustinland Comics! Now on Amazon, featuring such comics as The Theory of Hipster Relativity, Dorm of The Deaf, and More Choo-Choo! Buy it today, because you love me!

Two comics for the new year

I drew two comics for the new year.

A positive one.

A negative one.
