The Long Hard Truth

Man, as I say in this week’s Dustinland comic, explaining stuff to your kids can take forever. Not science stuff. The sky is blue, that sort of thing? It’s pretty cut and dry most of the time. Either they get it or they don’t (or you know it or you don’t). Issues made more complex by society though — those are harder. Issues of gender, race and other human qualities are easy to talk about but hard to explain, which makes for lengthy, complicated conversations. On the plus side though, they do seem to lay bare prejudices, hypocrisy and all that’s silly and unfair in society — and maybe even in us as individuals. At the very least that’s pretty interesting.

Oh, and it can also be hilarious.

Bright and Shiny

How do these kids wake up so quickly? Like I say in this week’s Dustinland comic, they’re like robots. There’s an on mode and an off mode, and that’s pretty much it. Me, waking up is a slow process. I ease into it. Him—nope. Eyes closed, eyes open. LET’S. DO. THIS.

And man, I gotta tell you, it is hard playing with trains from 6:30 am – 8:00 am on a Monday. I love the kiddo and every minute is precious but sometimes I wouldn’t mind if he’d wake up a little later, pour me a cup of coffee and ask me to help him with the Times crossword.

Instagram Cliches 2

I did another Dustinland comic about Instagram cliches a while back (old one here). It had a different title, but basically the same thing, so I called this one part 2 (new comic here).

Now, I’ll admit, I go for some of these once in a while. Hey, straight facade architecture shots? I love em. But it is funny to see these same shots reproduced over and over again. Different places, different subjects, same photos. I mean hey, certain things work really well in a 1- to 2-inch square.

Just Playin

Yup. This week’s Dustinland comic. It happened. The action was less magical than the quote though. And together, wow. You gotta love it. I mean, I don’t enjoy being slapped in the face and I try to discourage it but sometimes you laugh too hard to get mad.
