A Brief History of Conservatism

“In its second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came from the screen… A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic…” – George Orwell, 1984

This week’s Dustinland was inspired by all the nasty things McCain supporters have been saying about Obama lately – particularly that he’s a terrorist. I mean, does that word even have a meaning anymore? If you asked these people to define “terrorist,” I wonder what they’d come up with, besides just saying “Obama” or “someone who hates freedom” or some other meaningless bullshit. Because it’s not about truth or logic with these people. It’s about us or them. And it has been that way for a long, long time. The people who today call themselves “conservatives” have been around forever. I’m not talking about Ron Paul supporters or people with brains who choose to support the Republican party for some reason. I’m talking about the people who wish that McCain would step down and let Palin run for office herself. These people are angry. They’re afraid. They don’t want something different. They don’t want something new. They don’t want change: It scares them. So they look at the thing they fear, and they label it, they debase it, they hate it, and they try to destroy it. And the Republican Party today needs these people to win, so it has become a cult of mean, angry, raving lunatics. And to see them together in large groups can be a frightening thing.

***Update: This strip is heating up on Reddit.

  1. So, you are willing to attack McCain supporters for calling Obama a terrorist but not the mindless liberal left that has been calling Bush hitler for the past 8 years, or calls McCain a POW Psyco? Who is really the cult of mean and angry lunatics? Surely both parties have their share of crazies. But, you are willing to dismiss the Ayers tie even though Obama hasn’t been forthcoming with it. His story has changed 8 times. Is it not fair to question his judgement.

  2. Lumping all conservatives into the mold you’ve made is really offensive and ignorant. But you’ll continue to believe whatever you want. This is why I cringe when I think about how I will be voting for Obama. People like YOU who make me worry that my vote for Obama will lump me in with you. You’re just as much a bigot and ignorant person as the “conservatives” you’re professing the history for.

And yes, I get the joke, so don’t tell me to get a sense of humor.

  3. …wow… you really sparked some of the conservatives that read your comic… “bigot” and “ignorant person”… I honestly don’t think you’re far off with your comic… the sad truth is, too many “conservatives” fit into your mold… and you’re right… they are labeling Obama a terrorist, for having served on a committee with a guy that was, when Obama was 9, aligned to an organization that did some bad things… foolish, foolish world…

  4. The same thing happens every time.
Me: “I’m not talking about Ron Paul supporters or people with brains who choose to support the Republican party for some reason.”
Them: “Lumping all conservatives into the mold you’ve made is really offensive and ignorant.”

  5. Vagina.

  6. As a 77-year-old Nana, I’m not at all sure why I bother trying to respond to this sort of thing, but it just seems to ‘Pop’ out once in awhile. I remember an old adage from somewhere . . . “Never engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed person.” . . . or something like that.
I can’t help asking myself, ‘How can there be so many bigoted people in our country who obviously refuse to search for the truth about ANY candidate for office’? Having been a teacher for many years, the most vital objective for helping students form opinions and to make judgments ,was to instill in them the need to search for the whole truth about a subject, or a person before coming to a final conclusion. Ignorance is a terrible thing. Get the “facts” first . . . ALL of the facts, using every possible resource. Only then can a person form an HONEST judgment and/or opinion according to their moral values. There should never be a reason to disgrace our humanity as so many are doing in the video on this blog . . . or at the political gatherings we have watched on TV. Whether anyone agrees with Dustin, or not . . . he has at least made the effort to point out how ridiculous this election has become. Keep on Keeping ON, Dustin!

  7. NanaRose for President! Her platform? TRUTH.

  8. I’m really liking the ads you put on your site Dustin… take a look http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hypocritemuchkm1.jpg

  9. I noticed that you used the word debased in your blog post. Whenever I see that word, I immediately think of the Pixies song “Debaser.”
